NO CAMP NO is a stop-motion animation that captures the artist’s reaction to human rights violations at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. It was inspired by Scott Horton’s report, The Guantanamo “Suicides”, which examines the 2006 deaths of three detainees at an unofficial site known as Camp No. The violent performance documented in NO CAMP NO is employed as a means to reconcile the artist’s inner sense of remorse and shame over the actions of her government with the character of her external self-representation: as citizen, artist and human being, but also, inferentially, as both prisoner and executor. The animation consists of over 2000 still photographs taken during a 3-hour tattooing procedure the artist inflicted upon herself in 2010.
