This tribute to @nomoredeaths_nomasmuertes was one of my absolute favs of last year!

[No mas muertes is a group based in Tucson providing humanitarian aid to those attempting border crossings from Mexico; many people perish from thirst, hunger and exposure].

I’ve posted before about the disintegration of core American values, and yesterday was another huge reminder of how far we’ve come from the ideals that once united us and gave some glimmer of hope that we might one day live up to the songs we like to sing about ourselves and the democracy we imagine to be so great. We’ll see if the next two years of democratic majority can fulfill on walking back the systemic intolerance and insidious conservatism that’s been strangling our country and keeping our system from being anything close to the ‘land of the free and home of the brave’.

Patriotism is not what the world saw happening yesterday in DC; rather it is the efforts of regular folks like you and me standing up for the rights protected by our constitution and fighting to see them enjoyed by all who call this this country home. However we can. 🇺🇸

Personally I’m not ready to give far right extremists or the terrorists who enact their vision of a toxic, small-minded, fascist America the satisfaction or the power to deny me my love for the US, or my claim as a patriot. I will not let the shameful acts or beliefs of a deluded, ignorant minority faction shame ME into denying or disavowing my patriotism and Americanism. And I hope you can all find it in your hearts to remember, cling to, and fight for what you love most about this country as well.

I love getting to work on pieces like this that are:
1) reproductions of canonical works of fine art
2) based in print media (etchings, woodcuts, lithography, silkscreen, etc)
3) poetic or metaphysical in theme, dealing with tropes of transformation, spiritual movement, underworld/other worlds, etc)
4) available in the public domain or respectfully licensed from the artist (for contemporary pieces)

I can usually accommodate faithful reproductions like this sooner than custom pieces. Most often they are ease-full and warmly meditative projects that I love getting to work on as we both grow in appreciation of another’s mastery in creative work!

~ tarot art, loving most the medieval and early twentieth century decks

On a personal note, I’ve been really excited to get a few requests for conches and other shells in the last several months, while I’ve been studying the Bhagavad Gita (major text of the Hindu religion). There is beautiful imagery and years worth of philosophy to contemplate throughout this text, but the first chapter is particularly marked by the beating of tabors and blowing of conches as rival armies gather on the battlefield of dharma and make their presence known. It’s a riveting scene, and one my study group spent months reading (despite only being a few dozen pages long), so I love getting to accent this little piece of my own spiritual exploration with some nature studies in my tattoo practice! Please keep ‘em coming, always love reproducing all the kinds of spirals found nature and beyond ! 🌀
